On July 1-2 2024, Villa Verbinding & The Rotterdam Circle
will host the conference:
Systemic thinking and working
in Mental Health services
two days with Masters of Change
We welcome you to our two practice-based conference days!
The focus of these days is on how systemic thinking and working has contributed to the innovation of Dutch Mental Health.
On the first day, Maurizio Andolfi will inspire us with live consultations. Relying on his solid belief that the family is the best medicine, he will
work with families under pressure and will look for resources within their community and culture. This way linking this conference with the inspiring conference in Assisi (July ‘23).
On the second day, we pay hommage to Nico Moleman (psychiatrist and family therapist). We accentuate the importance of the innovative, systems based practices that he introduced in Dutch Mental Health organizations. Floortje Scheepers and Maurizio Andolfi, among others, will contribute to this day.

Day 1: Master of Change: Maurizio Andolfi
Monday July 1st 2024 – Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam
For many years, The Rotterdam Circle has been organizing inspiring conferences featuring Maurizio Andolfi and guest speakers. Attributing to the success of these gatherings are the authenticity of the live consulations, as well as Andolfi’s multigenerational vision for families under pressure. Andolfi has taught us that as humans we are always part of a family, of generations before us, of our community, culture and society. The 2023 Assisi conference emphasized this once more.
Touching examples were presented in Assisi of how interpersonal connection and support are vital in building and maintaining resilience, and how Mental Health Services can support and engage in enabling people to build a community and draw strength from their community. In the same spirit as Francis from Assisi did centuries ago. On day 1 we will focus on the manifesto that was written during the Assisi conference (see schedule).
In two live consultations, Maurizio Andolfi will implement this powerful movement by encouraging the family to carry and maybe solve their problems together, with the broader family and with the wider community.
Andolfi will also work with ‘the person of the therapist’.
We will conclude the day with a special documentary on transcultural therapy. Arti Kewal, psychologist and family therapist, participates in this documentary. Kewal and Andolfi will reflect on the power of transcultural thinking in therapy.

Day 2: Master of Change: Nico Moleman
Tuesday July 2nd 2024 – De Metaal Kathedraal, Utrecht
On this conference day we focus on the considerable contribution Nico Moleman has made by standardizing in his Mental Health services a broad range of systemic interventions. A few of those systemic ‘pillars’ are:
-
Consult your clients instead of consulting your team about them;
-
Every new client is asked to take at least one loved-one to the first meeting;
-
We are a mental health center you would refer your loved-ones to;
-
The institute trusts the employees’ professional standard and responsibility;
-
No division between adult and youth mental health service.
We will focus on these and more pillars and will assemble in workshops to discuss how mental health workers can implement them in their own mental health center.
Together with Maurizio Andolfi we will reflect on the importance of these standards and with Floortje Scheepers we’ll look toward the future role of systems therapy in Dutch Mental Health
